Our Counselling Agreement

A counselling relationship is built on trust, understanding, and care. As we begin our work together, I have outlined below some helpful information about what you can expect from me as your counsellor, about our relationship, and about a few important points that support your safety and well-being as well as mine.

Please take a little time to read this before your first appointment. If you have any questions at all, you are very welcome to contact me by email at heatherchristiecounselling@gmail.com, or we can talk about them together in our sessions.

As a person-centred counsellor, I offer a supportive, non-judgemental space where you are in control of what we explore and the pace we work at. My role is to listen, support, and help you make sense of your experiences, rather than to direct or advise you. We will take time to reflect on our work together around every six sessions, but I hope you feel able to feedback on our therapeutic work at any point during our time.

My responsibilities to you

  • Provide clear communication around agreed appointment times – I will send a reminder 24hrs prior to each appointment.

  • Agree with you safe, professional boundaries from the outset – e.g. agreeing your hopes for counselling, your preferred method of communication.

  • Our sessions will be confidential unless I have serious concerns about your safety or the safety of others. This is inline with the BACP (my regulatory body) Ethical Framework. As part of my membership with the BACP I also attend professional supervision to monitor my abilities as a counsellor.

  • Any notes of our sessions together are available to you on request.

Client responsibilities

  • Please arrive on time for sessions. Should you need to change or cancel then please give at least 24 hours’ notice. I will try to be as flexible as possible to rearrange our sessions however 50% of the fee may be payable for repeated late cancellations or non-attendance.

  • Please attend sessions free from the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs as this impacts on our ability to work therapeutically.

  • Payment for each session in full at the time of your appointment. This can be paid in cash or by bank transfer.

  • Please provide the contact details of your GP and a named emergency contact who I could contact if I have serious concerns about your safety and well-being.
